Initial D

Just watched the newest disc of Initial D. It's funny really. The writing is reasonable. The characters aren't too bad. The CG racing is obviously CG, but by the same token it's really not as jarringly obvious as previous ventures in to Computer Generated stuff in anime have been. But then I think of the horror.. the mouths! The art style of the characters is unique, but the mouths are just terrible. I think I've mentioned it before, but the problem seems to be that they are aiming for a "realistic" style, and when you're animating, anything you can do to cut corners helps immensely. A simple "line" to "O" mouth flap conveys the sense of speaking perfectly well. Trying to make an accurate mouth, on the other hand, requires quite a bit more detail. Initial D seems to be some monsterous hybrid, where they started by trying to make realistic mouths, decided it would take too much effort, ended up doing a cheap lip flap technique with what they already had, and ended up with something that takes away from the overall experience. Then again, the face shapes of the characters are often questionable as well. Almost all of the characters look sort of fat. I guess that could be construed as a nice change from all of the anorexic characters, but even in real life there are going to be a mix of face shapes and such. It seems like the artists didn't have enough skill to vary the shapes all that much, and settled mostly on a fat looking face with fat looking lips, and then altered the ratio a bit for different people.

Just to be clear, the preceeding is spoiler free, so feel free to see what I was blathering about.
