I'd like to find a place where I fit in. I visit various message boards every day at work and surf a variety of web sites, but it's really just a mechanical, almost thoughtless way to spend time. The trouble is that most message boards are populated by a mixture of 14 year olds and trolls, with the occasional honest poster every once in a while. This is especially true on the WoW forums, but also applies to the Guitar Hero forums strongly as well. The EvE Online forums have their share of trolls although it seems like their 14 year old population is small, but these days I'm not very excited by that game. Even Thottbot is riddled with trolls, first posts, and spamvertisement posts.
A long time ago I used to read slashdot and User Friendly. For a couple years, both sites were good and I felt that they reinforced my sense of technical prowess. Ironically, Microsoft ruined slashdot. Where the site used to be about "News for Nerds, Stuff that Matters", it eventually degenerated in to "News for Tinfoil Hat Wearers, Stuff that Matters to Politicians and Paranoid Basement Dwellers". Really, who cares what FUD was coming out of Redmond? Who cares that the politicians are trying to pass a bill that will make left clicking illegal? Obviously it's all stupid stuff, and I don't need to hear about it. Likewise, User Friendly became more smug and also had a "romance" occur between two characters, where the tech geek guy was generally oblivious to the tech geek girl's advances and fumbled what situations he was aware of. This was a painful reminder of Brandy specifically, but also my "love life" in general, or lack thereof.
